Preparing for pregnancy - inherited conditions

Talk to your doctor if you are worried about genetic (inherited) conditions such as cystic fibrosis or thalassemia.
If you know there is a genetic condition in your family or in your partner's family, it is best to speak to your doctor when you are thinking about becoming pregnant. It may be possible to do some testing before you become pregnant to see if there is a chance that your baby may have a problem.
Before having a genetic test you will have a chance to discuss the test with a genetic counsellor.
Once you are pregnant, there are tests that can be done for many genetic conditions to check if your unborn baby has the condition.
There is more information in the topic Pre-natal tests – (checking your baby's health before birth).

The information on this site should not be used as an alternative to professional care. If you have a particular problem, see your doctor or midwife.
